Our brains are hard-wired to scan our environment and pick up on threats of all kinds. Often the “threats” that trigger this primitive part of our brain are based on perceptions that may be distorted or inaccurate. For example, if I am feeling unworthy I might walk into a room and think others are thinking badly of me, setting off feelings of anxiety. Sometimes we even perceive threats in our imaginations when there is nothing threatening actually occurring in our environment (e.g., getting anxious anticipating a situation that might happen in the future).
